Since 1991, RI General Law Chapter 24.6, Lead Poisoning Prevention Act mandated that:

  • Beginning January 1, 1993, each physician registered or licensed by Rhode Island or any agency thereof shall screen children under six years of age for lead poisoning,
  • Beginning January 1, 1994, each child care provider licensed, certified or approved by any Rhode Island state agency shall obtain from a parent or guardian of each child in care under the age of six years, but not less than 9 months of age, evidence that said child has been screened for lead poisoning,
  • Any physician registered or licensed by Rhode Island or any agency thereof or any employee of a licensed, registered or approved health care facility making the diagnosis of childhood lead poisoning shall report such diagnosis to the Director [of Health] within 10 business days of the diagnosis.

To comply with the law, the Lead Poisoning Prevention Program conducts a number of efforts to support, measure, and monitor lead screening.

For additional technical assistance related to lead screening, please contact us.

Primary Care Providers in Rhode Island can also participate in KIDSNET, the state's integrated child health information system, which contains pediatric public health data, including lead screening. Using KIDSNET, participating providers can generate reports of their "never screened" patients in their practice. Click here to learn more about KIDSNET.
