Re: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine
On June 29, 2006, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) issued recommendations for use of HPV vaccine for the prevention of human papilloma virus and cervical cancer in females. HPV vaccine is licensed for females 9-26 years of age http://www.cdc.gov/nip/vaccine/hpv/default.htm .
Three doses of HPV vaccine (schedule: 0, 2, and 6 months) is recommended over a six-month period. Routine vaccination is recommended at 11-12 years of age and catch-up vaccination for other eligible age groups. To review the recommendations in full, visit http://www.cdc.gov/nip/recs/provisional_recs/hpv.pdf .
State-supplied Vaccine (SSV) Distribution Plan
The Immunization Program expects to begin distribution of HPV vaccine through the SSV program in late January. Effective immediately, SSV enrolled providers may begin ordering HPV vaccine with your regular monthly vaccine order. Allocation of HPV vaccine will be calculated based on the amount of Tdap vaccine (also recommended at 11-12 years and catch-up) routinely used by your site. Each practice's Tdap use will be calculated as a percentage of the total statewide Tdap distribution over the past year and that percentage will be allocated based on the quantity of HPV vaccine the state receives each month.
Vaccine should be used for:
- Routine vaccination of girls at 11-12 years of age
- Catch-up vaccination (as supply permits) may be phased in at:
- 15 years of age (high school entry) or
- 18 years of age (while still eligible for state-supplied vaccine)
Note: Providers may use their discretion in prioritizing catch-up vaccination in one of the age cohorts listed above based on review of ACIP recommendations, their patient risk/population and monthly allocation of vaccine. In consultation with our physician advisory panel, our recommendation follows ACIP priorities, and we hope to give you flexibility to offer "catch-up" series to older girls in the way that will be most effective in your practice. We are enthusiastic about the HPV vaccine, but we are being conservative about predicted availability until we have more experience with supply, demand, and success with the 3-dose series.
