Rhode Island Influenza Surveillance Summary

WEEKLY ESTIMATE OF FLU ACTIVITY LEVEL
Activity Level for week 15 (4/12/2009 – 4/18/2009) is Sporadic.
The criteria for weekly influenza activity are set by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Click here for a definition of the criteria for each activity level.
INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS
For week 15 (4/12/2009 – 4/18/2009) sentinel providers report that 0.39 % of office visits were for influenza-like illness (ILI).
Weekly Flu Illness Chart for 2008-2009 Season.
Rhode Island has 16 sentinel physicians (representing all counties in the state) who provide ILI data to the Department of Health on a weekly basis.
Definition of Influenza-like illness (ILI):  Fever (≥100 degrees F (37.80 degrees C)) and cough and/or sore throat (in the absence of a known cause other than influenza).
Providers who are not sentinel physicians are not required to report individual cases of influenza to the Health Department or to the CDC.  Therefore, the above data do not include all cases of influenza in the state.
LAB REPORTS
The State Lab confirms cases of influenza (in samples submitted from sentinel providers) by PCR test and/or culture and also provides flu subtype identification.
